Hilton health care plan in Puerto Rico unaffordable and deficient

Nearly a quarter of the employees at Hilton’s three Puerto Rico properties do not have health care for themselves and their families because they cannot afford the monthly premiums.

At the two hotels where health care improvements are most urgently needed, the El San Juan and the Condado Plaza, premiums make up just under 10% of the average pre-tax wage. Participation is also the lowest at these hotels, due to the high cost of coverage, with a third of Condado Plaza employees lacking health care and nearly 30% going without at the El San Juan.

Hilton also tries to keep the number of employees who participate in the health care plan down by abusing eligibility rules, so that even employees who are willing and able to pay the high premiums are prevented from accessing these benefits.

In addition, not only is the plan unaffordable and difficult to get, it is also inadequate for those that do manage to pay for its coverage. The network of participating doctors is small, and claims are slow to be processed. Basic wellness care like annual physical exams are not covered, and neither are life-saving procedures like organ transplants.
